Musician’s Retreat Proves Fruitful

ARTICLE BY KENT JACKSON (STAFF WRITER) Published: September 15, 2011

After Hazleton musician Lenny Kucinski retreated to a ranch in California, the songs for his latest compact disc started flowing.

“I’ve been playing guitar for 35 years of my life. I never had it like that: all the songs inside of me to have to come out. I wrote more songs this past year than I did in 35 years. It broke down barriers, opened my eyes to a lot of things,” Kucinski, 43, said after attending a retreat for a Christian organization called Band of Brothers in Arroyo Grande, Calif.

Kucinski equates the breakthrough to a heart surgeon opening a blockage, a metaphor he uses in one of the new songs, “Heart Block Blues.”

The CD is called “The Battle Begins,” and the group that Kucinski assembled for the recording sessions is called Vessel, a name indicating that Kucinski wants to be filled with and used by God. Read more…

Online Review – The Battle Begins by Vessel

Posted by Sigourney Soul on Sep 24, 2011 at damesofpa.com

This past week, the Christian rock group Vessel released their debut album The Battle Begins. The effort was was spearheaded by producer and lead guitarist Lenny Kucinski and recorded, mixed, and mastered at Studio Independence, a state-of-the-art home recording facility.

Joining Kucinski as the core of the “band” are drummer/co-producer Ivan Justofin and bassist/vocalist Joe Whalen. A further group of diverse musicians were enlisted to perform various musical parts throughout the album, which greatly adds to the sonic diversity of the album itself. As the album’s liner notes state; “Vessel is not somuch a traditional ‘band’ but a collection of individuals from many different bands and walks of life…” While all the songs on the album are consistantly forged from the believer’s point of view, there is a good variety of situational lyrics and an even greater variety of musical genres and styles. These range from harder-edged pop/rock to folk, blues, jazz, funk, and theatrical arrangements.

At the CD relese party this past Sunday (9/18), Kucinski gave a brief explanation of each song on the album, as well as the role(s) that each of the fourteen musicians played in putting this album together. He also gave a brief background on how the album came together, stating that the original inspiration for this project came from a California retreat called Band of Brothers, after which Kucinski entered into a prolific writing period, penning the bulk of songs on The Battle Begins. He also noted his lofty goal of creating a new genre with this album called “Epic Christian Pop Rock”. Read More…

The Battle Begins – Trailer

The Two Fishermen

In 1990 while driving home dead tired from a gig in Pottstown, PA – Lenny feel asleep at the wheel and flipped his car over at 4am. There were 2 fishermen up at that time and miraculously dragged him out of the burning car right before it exploded. (“Though you walk through the fire, you will not be burned..”) These fishermen dropped Lenny off at the nearest hospital and disappeared. For the following 10 years, Lenny’s mother ran an ad in the newspapers on the accidents’ anniversary seeking out these fishermen with no response at all.  She is now convinced these men were Lenny’s guardian angels!

After realizing he had been given a 2nd chance decided to do something special with his life. Lenny devoted himself to giving back the gift of music he realized God graced him with, along with a passion to continually improve. A short time later, after finding himself homeless, without a car, no job, and struggling to make it in the local music scene, Lenny ventured into the business world and found Primerica (or Primerica found him), which literally changed his life forever!

This surprising turn of events had me put music on hold for for next 10 years to build a foundation of a business that now has his family financially independent. Lenny can now finally pursue the dream of music at the highest level, with the freedom and fun recording while playing live with many diverse bands!

Vessel

Formed in 2010, immediately following the deafening call to the music ministry Lenny was drawn to after attending his single biggest breakthrough event of his lifetime – A Wild at Heart retreat (Band Of Brothers Bootcamp) at Mike Sharpes’ ranch in California. This 4 day journey broke down walls, spiritual warfare, self doubt, ego, as well as an example of what it really means to be a Godly man to have songs start to flood in on the ride to the airport.

Lenny immediately wrote the majority of the songs on the debut album within weeks following God’s prompting and direction, in hopes to reach and change the lives of people everywhere struggling with the same battles. The song “Band Of Brothers” has now become the Anthem for the Band Of Brothers Bootcamp.

With the help of his main collaborators: Joe Whalen on bass and Ivan Martin Justofin on Drums and production, the recording started in February of 2011 and within 6 months, 10 songs were arranged, tweaked, and completely produced. A total of 12 extremely talented individuals took their time to add a part to the songs that took them to levels noone even dreamed of. Joe, Ivan, and Lenny were all amazed by how God’s hand just made everything happen in a fraction of the time an album of this magnitude and assembling this much talent would normally take.

ves·sel/ˈvesəl/Noun

A willing mind ready to receive teaching; also Chosen vessels, ministers of the gospel, as appointed to bear the glad news of salvation to others; called also earthen vessels, on account of their weakness and frailty.

“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God, and not of us” (2 Corinthians 4:7)

Vessel is not so much a traditional “band” but a collection of individuals from many different bands and walks of life that wanted to make an impact in the world by giving back a piece of the talent God gave each one of them!

Established in 2002 from a vision cast to Lenny, Rich and Jay from George Houseknecht.  It was George’s passion that got the band started on this unlikely journey, in the midst of many already hectic lives.

For 8 years it was almost 100% Trans-Siberian Orchestra. The last 3 years, they started adding their own spice, personality, and fun to the mix, and last year, with internationally selling original CD release, Miracle on Rock Street, it’s over 1/3 completely original Christmas and classical  interpretations. This band’s bold plans include evolving to their own brand and becoming the 3rd band in a world of only 2 big dedicated holiday touring acts – Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Mannheim Steamroller.

“Miracle is truly aptly named, as it was a miracle with all the adversity that faced us, studio changes, and personnel conflicts that happened during the entire writing and recording process.  The fact that it was release exactly when planned proved God had his hand on this band and showed us all a Christmas miracle, from our journey’s beginning at Rock Street.”

Jason Santos wrote and arranged the majority of the songs, while guitarist Kevin Reilly added his original style to several holiday classics as well. Ultimately it was the entire band of 18, along with producer Ivan Martin Justofin, that added each’s own spice and personality to truly make the songs one of kind.  The album was topped off with producing and engineering from award winning producers Dennis D’Amico, and Jason Corsaro, who also worked with the Rolling Stones, Madonna, Peter Gabriel, Mariah Carey, and a host of other superstars.

Stage Production of this magnitude- separate trucks for both lighting and sound, would not have been possible every year if it weren’t for Rock Street Music, under the family ownership of Rich Kossuth, the band’s drummer.

The loyal and dedicated 8 person road-crew set up all day in a different city daily to make this show the quality it is. Heading up that team is head of sound engineering- Gene Smith, and lighting director Tommy Abod, who haven’t missed a single gig in soon to be 10 years of touring!
There are 18 performers than come in from all over the northeast to meet up at every gig- which averages about 20 cities within a 30 day window every year.

Working on the 2011 schedule and rehearsals now, as well as more originals flowing out for another album already on the horizon.

One Night Stand

Beginning as only a 3 piece band 10 years ago for only only one  gig- the MGM GRAND in Las Vegas- ONS evolved into something bigger than any of them would’ve ever imagined! With members from coast to coast- California, Mass, PA, and, Arizona, One Night Stand went from literally a Vegas one night stand to now TAKING a one night stand against cancer, raising money through concerts throughout the United States for the Fullness of Life Foundation, including the LA CONVENTION CENTER.   The foundation’s founder and ONS lead singer Sandy Yozipovic has coordinated the events to  help save children’s lives by raising money for their treatments with the Envita Center in Scottsdale, AZ – a place where Sandy, a stage 4 cancer survivor, was treated and life saved.

Also serving as Primerica’s house band for all Vice President retreats held 2x/yr at the Chateau Elan in Georgia, ONS was given the highest honor for any performer: playing to a over 50,000 people in the  GEORGIA DOME, twice the past several years for Primerica’s convention.

“It is indescribable the feeling of playing the Dome!  Its like living the dream of every single human being who picks up an instrument to visualize playing in an arena like that. The nerves, the 6 months leading up to it, the anticipation backstage, especially right before you cross the line when the entire dome goes dark, the roar of the crowd builds, and the lights hit you, and one guitar chord echoes throughout the dome, crowd swells into a echoing roar- wow! We all still get the chills thinking about it.”

Amazing friendships, the greatest people, and magic moments happen every-time they are all together, even though its only 2-3x per year.
